Why Become a GDS Member? |
Membership of the Garden Design Society opens the door to a fantastic range of opportunities not normally available to the general public.
- A stimulating array of evening lectures once a month, preceded by a friendly glass of wine and a chance to catch up with like-minded enthusiasts
- Forays into garden art – recent talks have included leading sculptors Virginia King (internationally recognised for her stainless steel Reed Vessel at Melbourne’s Docklands, land sculptures near Auckland and even a lighthouse on Waiheke Island); Jeff Thompson (famous for his iconic corrugated iron elephants and chooks among other creations), and Mark Davidson (resident pebble mosaic expert)
- Intriguing insights into the work of local garden designers willing to share their experiences – how they have enhanced the positive, overcome the pitfalls and come up with successful, enduring design solutions
- Armchair travel via informative and visually stunning slide shows by members returning from overseas study tours - Sue Wake (Westonbirt Garden Festival, UK, and Chaumont, France), Jacqueline Margetts (Andre Le Notre’s ‘other’ gardens in France), Michael Jones (the Moghul gardens of Kashmir, India and UK designers – behind the scenes at the Chelsea Flower Show, London), Jill Pierce (Moorish gardens of Spain), Ian Henderson (temple gardens of Japan)
- Entertaining and enlightening international speakers - landscape designers like Czechoslavakian-born Australian, Vladimir Sitta, who is in great demand for his unique approach to landscape design in his adopted country and elsewhere
- Regular weekend day trips to gardens (many of them not usually open to visit) - Ted Smyth’s Pie Melon Bay on Waiheke Island and Connell’s Bay Sculpture Park

As a GDS Member you are entitled to:

Open to anyone who is currently enrolled in a course of study at a recognised Tertiary Education provider (part or full time)

Accredited Members are recognised by the Society as professional garden designers or as teachers or researchers in the field of garden design. Applications for Accreditation are assessed by the GDS Accreditation Board. Applicants must have completed a minimum of three years experience working in their field and have passed a recognised course of study. They also need to submit a portfolio of work and complete an interview with the Accreditation Board.

The Accreditation Board will be holding Accreditation interviews in November 2008. Below is the 2008 timetable.
Step 1 Application packs ready : Information meeting 2 July 2008
Step 2 Applications close - 23 July 2008
Step 3 First Mentoring workshop - 30 July 2008
Step 4 Submission of Applicants’ portfolios due - 31 October 2008
Step 5 Board interviews - November 2008
