GDSNZ brings you Guy Bowden from Tawapou Coastal Natives

When: Wednesday 21st July, 7pm.
Everyone welcome - $5 entry for non-members.
Where: Lecture Theatre 1, School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, UNITEC NZ, Carrington Road, Mt Albert (Entrance 1)
Those that went on our recent Northland trip were so impressed when listening to Guy Bowden, we have arranged for him to come down to Auckland to talk to all of us.

Background:
Tawapou Coastal Natives
evolved out of a desire by both Guy and Sandra Bowden to be able to work from home on the family farm. The 350 acre farm borders the coastline between Tutukaka and Matapouri about 30 km’s North East of Whangarei. The property has one of the most significant fully protected Queen Elizabeth 11 Trust lowland broadleaf coastal forests  in Northland.

Tawapou specializes in growing plants from the warmer northern regions of NZ with a particular emphasis  on coastal and off- shore island plants,  propagating almost all they produce themselves by seed and cutting material from the property and other nearby areas. They have an extensive native garden covering several acres surrounding the nursery.

The Bowden’s family farm is the closest point of the mainland to the Poor Knights Islands which dominates the horizon .  During his time as Marina Manager at Tutukaka , Guy became very  involved with the islands and  he developed the weed programme for the Poor Knights in 1996. Over the next few years visits were made to the islands for up to ten days at a time in effort to eliminate weeds.

The Poor Knights Island Story covers the geology, history, fauna and flora of these fantastic ancient islands.

Phil Oster talk on California designer Lawrence Halprin and The Sea Ranch - 15 July 2009

This presentation was be based on Phil Oster's 2007 visit to The Sea Ranch, situated on the Pacific Coast north of San Francisco. The presentation was a collective of photographic stills, video excerpts and audio snippets from his personal collection and  from The Cultural Landscape Foundation archives. The  presentation covered both the personal trip and some of the technical aspects of the design involved in the development of this community.

The Sea Ranch was designed as an ecologically planned community by Lawrence Halprin and Associates from 1964 to 1969 and continues to evolve 40 years on with mixed results from the original concepts. This was a major development in Landscape Architecture/ Ecological Planning that had and continues to have far reaching effects and lessons for us as Landscape Designers and Architects today.
We look forward to seeing you there on.

Spring field Trip, Gardenza Glenbrook Beach Road, Waiuku - 1 October 2008
Gardenza Glenbrook Beach Road, Waiuku
Topiary by Tim Bell 93 Bungard Rd, Karaka
The October spring field trip to Gardenza and Tim Bell Topiary was inspirational and helpful for sourcing unusual and high quality plants.  David Brundell recently spoke to the GDSNZ, outlined his vision and showed images of his dream taking shape. The planting of the new area is unfinished but the planting and layout of the existing garden is outstanding.

Chelsea Flower Show

Our past Chairman, Michael Jones, whilst in London, enabled us to bring you some photos from the Chelsea Flower Show. These include a couple of images from GDSNz member Xanthe White's Silver-Gilt winning 100% Pure NZ Garden. The photos include images from Tom Stuart Smith's garden judged Best in Show and one from the small garden category by Ruth Marshall...ENJOY!

Ruth Marshalls garden "Seeing the Whole Picture"for the Mencap Foundation for the Learning-Disabled; At the rear are photos of a normal child and a disabled child, with three vertical prisms in front of them which fracture the images and "encourage the viewer to change their way of seeing learning disability".  The surroundings are designed to be "intrinsically beautiful, reflective, and stimulating to the senses".

Review of trip to Hamilton Gardens

We began the day at Margaret and Hamish McKegg’s riverside garden near Hamilton. The photo here bears testimony to the thoughtful design moves embraced in this garden. It is elegant, cool, green – quite serene. It encounters its landscape, and the river and pastoral setting are quietly invoked. It plays on long low horizontal lines and the strong axes – not immediately obvious – are exciting when discovered.

Peter Sergel was unavailable to show us around the Hamilton Gardens, but fortunately Nigel Holman introduced the Gardens to us. Even those of us fairly familiar with the Gardens found the scale of the gardens and audacity of the vision very impressive, especially after the completion of the last two paradise gardens, the Mughal and Italian Rennaissance.

Our day finished with a touch of art - and coffee - at the Waikato Art Museum.
